Our Apprentice Network is designed to connect apprentices and graduates from across our member companies and provide opportunities for mentoring, networking, meeting other apprentices and sharing experiences and best practice.

We spoke to Degree Apprentice (Project Management) Aaron Rigg.

Can you describe your role in a few words?

I am currently situated in the project controls team at AtkinsRéalis, rotating through planning, project support office and Assistant Project Management opportunities on differing transportation projects.

What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?

I was at Sixth Form followed by a gap year.

What was your perception of the infrastructure sector before you started your apprenticeship?

I appreciated that it involved complex and vital projects; multidisciplinary interactions between project management and other business units such as engineering, creative design etc.

What interested you in joining AtkinsRéalis?

A variety of interesting projects really. I liked that I would have the ability to undertake a degree whilst working. I also appreciate the staff networks available to me.

What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?

I have learnt key skills like data analysis, invoicing and using Primavera P6. I have also learnt good communication skills, and how to collaborate effectively on projects.

What is the most exciting part of your role?

Witnessing a project progress throughout the whole project life cycle.

What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?

I would like to be an Assistant Project Manager and then progress to a Project Manager role.
