The High Speed Rail Group Apprentice Network is designed to connect apprentices and graduates from across our member companies and provide opportunities for mentoring, networking, meeting other apprentices and sharing experiences and best practice.
We spoke to Apprentice Civil Engineer Abdurrahman Ibrahim.
Can you describe your role in a few words?
My role at Arcadis is quite varied, it involves:
- performing 3D model reviews
- carry out Asset Tagging (Using various software to attribute information to a model)
- Performing Calculation Checks
- Document Drafting
What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?
Prior to my apprenticeship, I was at college studying AS Level Core Mathematics and completed a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science. Through my AS Level Mathematics course, I discovered my passion for solving mathematical problems, which inspired me to pursue a career in a field that values problem-solving and analytical thinking.
What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?
My perception of civil engineering was that it was very much a problem solving industry, and that the work was very much out on site.
What interested you in joining Arcadis?
I knew that having the opportunity to work for a big company would give me valuable industry experience.
What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?
I have learnt a lot of problem solving skills. When I have come across a challenge in the workplace, I have learnt to use various different sources to solve a problem as opposed to seeking help straight away. I’ve also learnt the importance of communication between colleagues and across teams, and that attention to detail and thoroughness when completing work is essential. I am also learning a lot about time management, alongside key IT skills.
What is the most exciting part of your role?
I find receiving a task with a specific deadline and successfully delivering the tasks within that time frame very exciting.
Have you worked on the HS2 project through your apprenticeship?
I have worked on the HS2 project since the start of my apprenticeship. More specifically, I have been working on the Ancillary Civils team for the Central Contract (C2) of HS2.
What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?
I would like to continue working towards further qualifications and gaining more experience in the industry.
