We spoke to Apprentice Technician Adam Salum

Can you describe your role in a few words?

As an Apprentice Technician currently in the SYSTRA Bridges team, I support engineers and designers by producing models and drawings in Computer Aided Design (CAD) for projects, together with aiding in design management.

What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?

I did A Levels and BTEC in Sixth Form.

What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?

Before starting my apprenticeship, I saw civil engineering as all about construction sites and building structures. I assumed there would be a lot of physics and mechanics involved.

What interested you in joining SYSTRA?

Their presence in the global market is what attracted me.

What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?

I have learnt about modelling, carrying out structural analysis, cost estimation and procurement and the consents process.

What is the most exciting part of your role?

I think feeling part of the project, communicating with colleagues who have a whole set of different skills and experiences, and gaining technical knowledge are the most rewarding parts of my job.

Have you worked on the HS2 project through your apprenticeship?

I have worked on HS2 since February 2024.

What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?

I’d like to build my career as a civil engineer and lead major projects in the future.
