We spoke to Jack Embling, Apprentice Electrical Engineer with AECOM
Can you describe your role in a few words?
I am part of the Electrification and Power team, creating designs for the railways for Network Rail.
What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?
I was a Team Leader for a motor vehicle construction company.
What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?
I’ve always been fascinated with engineering and construction, but never really thought about how they relate to the rail industry.
What interested you in joining AECOM?
I must admit, I hadn’t really heard of AECOM before I joined but after doing some research, it was easy to see that AECOM would be a great company to work for. Being one of the top infrastructure companies in the world, but also being top of important lists such as ‘World’s most admired companies’ and ‘World’s most ethical companies’.
What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?
- A much deeper knowledge of Electrical Engineering
- Railway design knowledge
- How to use key computer software
What is the most exciting part of your role?
What I enjoy most is solving engineering problems and discussing these problems with colleagues
What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?
After completing my apprenticeship with AECOM, I would like to stay with the company, and work my way up within the company and further my knowledge within the engineering industry.
