We spoke to Jack Rhodes, an Advanced Apprentice with Alstom.

Can you describe your role in a few words?

I am an apprentice involved in the manufacture of trains on the production line. My role is to move around the different areas of the production process, learning a range of skills as I go. I am currently in Project Quality which is where quality issues are investigated and resolved accordingly. To be able to do this I need to be able to liaise across all areas of our company which is really exciting.

What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?

I was at school studying and taking my GCSE’s when I applied to Alstom, and started in the September after I finished school.

What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?

I was unaware how large and how much the work varies in the rail industry, nor did I realise the scale it is operated at.

What interested you in joining Alstom?

Originally, I wanted to work in the construction industry, but as I carried out my research, and spoke to my dad who is an engineer, I learnt about the technical side of engineering in the rail industry, and that Alstom is the largest manufacturer of trains in the UK, so would be a great company to apply to.

What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?

I have learnt how to follow Standard Operating Procedures and how important different sections of a production line are and the impact quality has on the product.

What is the most exciting part of your role?

The challenges I face as there is always something new that happens which I need to use my problem-solving skills and what I have learnt from training to reach the best outcome.

Have you worked on the HS2 project through your apprenticeship?

Currently I have not had any involvement in the HS2 project however it is something that I would like to be a part of in the future.

What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?

I would like to stay with Alstom and progress through the ranks and obtain a management position where I have a team of people who I can lead and make progress with for the company.
