Our Apprentice Network is designed to connect apprentices and graduates from across our member companies and provide opportunities for mentoring, networking, meeting other apprentices and sharing experiences and best practice.

We spoke to Advanced Fitting Apprentice Luke Vernon.

Can you describe your role in a few words?
As an advanced apprentice I work on the shop floor learning to assemble complex mechanical components for trains, such as bogies, braking systems, and interiors. I am learning to follow detailed engineering drawings and specifications, fitting parts and systems onto trains to precise tolerances and conducting functional tests to ensure components are installed and operating correctly.

What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?
I studied advanced manufacturing engineering at Derby roundhouse college while working my part time job at McDonalds.

What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?
My perception was that Alstom as a company provided rail services around the world while also having a role in my local area.

What interested you in joining Alstom?
I am interested in all things mechanical and my family had told me the history of Bombardier/Alstom and how good the apprenticeships are.

What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?
I have learnt about all the aspects of building a train from welding the body structures all the way to closing out the final snags at the end of the build.

What is the most exciting part of your role?
Having opportunity to learn about new parts of the business and interact with other functions of the business.

What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?
I would like to continue progressing through the business, networking and having new opportunities to learn.
