We spoke to Project Controls Degree Apprentice Megan McCreadie.
Can you describe your role in a few words?
I am currently working as the assistant commercial manager on the Engineering Delivery Partner (EDP) framework for HS2. This is a partnership between AtkinsRéalis, Jacobs and Sener Engineering that provides technical support for the development of the project.
What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?
Before my apprenticeship I had studies a BTEC in Business studies at sixth form and then took a gap year where I worked as a business administrator alongside a project manager in a software development team for 6 months.
What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?
Before I joined AtkinsRéalis, I didn’t realise how long large infrastructure projects take to deliver. There are so many elements to cover that I really had no idea of the level of complexity. There is such a variety of work within rail and infrastructure – more than I ever imagined, for example design, systems, lighting and more.
What interested you in joining AtkinsRéalis?
I was interested in joining AtkinsRéalis because I thought working in an Engineering company would be really interesting, as you are able to watch the projects that you work on benefit the world. It felt like it was going to be a very rewarding job.
What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?
The key things I have learnt so far in my job is how to plan a project, especially with using the P6 software. I have also learnt how important communication is with all stakeholders. And I have also learnt how to be organised, juggling a degree as well as a full-time job has meant I need to have great time management and be organised with my workload.
What is the most exciting part of your role?
My role is exciting to me as I have not worked on a project this large before so I can see the opportunities it can offer. I find my role enjoyable, as I have not worked in the commercial aspect of a project before so it is a great new learning experience for me.
What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?
I would like to become a project manager and manage major projects. I would also like to look at becoming chartered.
