We spoke to Project Controls Apprentice William Hone.
Can you describe your role in a few words?
My role at the moment involves moving round each discipline within the Project Controls function on the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU), which is a major programme of railway improvements which will bring better journeys to passengers travelling across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York. These improvements include electrifying and increase line speed. My role has included working in cost management, risk, change control, reporting and data and quality.
What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?
I was in sixth form prior to this role studying Geography, Financial Studies, Applied Science and Business Studies.
What was your perception of the infrastructure sector before you started your apprenticeship?
I didn’t really have a perception of the sector. I had little knowledge, and didn’t really appreciate the benefits it brings to the general public.
What interested you in joining Arcadis?
Before applying to Arcadis, I had never heard of the company however when I did some research, I found out that they are working on some very interesting projects that both interest me but also benefit the climate and bring real benefits to communities.
What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?
I have learnt that time management is fundamental when managing university and workload. I have also learnt that communication is massive and if that isn’t right a project is more than likely going to fail.
What is the most exciting part of your role?
The learning of new skills and information every day and also being able to see the programme I am working on actually been built and benefitting me and other people using it.
What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?
I would like to gain a permanent role on a programme that allows my career to grow, and one where I can see the long term benefits to the community that the programme will bring.
